Rage Against The Machine Releases Documentary About Race
Rage Against The Machine’s reunion came just in time for the country’s reignited racial justice movement. While they haven’t been able to hit the stage to spread their social and political messages to fans, the band is doing so with a new documentary “Killing In Thy Name.”
The band teamed up on the doc with a collective of international artists The Ummah Chroma, which translates to “communities of color.” The 15-minute movie features footage of a teacher and schoolchildren learning about the dark history of slavery, manifest destiny, and the concept of “whiteness” in America.”
“My mom [Mary Morello] is a white woman with a radical voice,” says guitarist Tom Morello. “For three decades she was a progressive teacher in a conservative high school inspiring students to challenge the system — in her actions and words she has always taught that racism must never be ignored and must always be confronted.”
Rage’s anthem “Killing In The Name” is sampled all throughout the piece, and the doc ends with live footage of the band performing the song.
