Metallica Was Surprised By Frontman James Hetfield’s Return To Rehab

Last September Metallica was forced to postpone their Australia and New Zealand tour when frontman James Hetfield decided to enter rehab, and now his bandmates admit they were just as shocked as fans that Hetfield needed help.

“We really didn’t see it coming,” Robert Trujillo tells “Metal Hammer.” “James seemed like he was fine, but then you look back and you try to analyze the situation over time and see where there were red flags.”

Kirk Hammet says the whole thing was hard for the band to take, calling it “deeply unsettling,” and adding, “It comes as a shock. You have to do a bit of scrambling just to cover some ground.”

Finally, Lars Ulrich shares, “I’m an only child, so these guys have been in my life longer than anybody else other than my parents. We know what the MO is. As you see your brothers, your friends, your partners go through ups and downs for decades, you know what the process becomes.”

  • ONE MORE THING! Metallica has released video of their performance of “For Whom The Bell Tolls” with the San Francisco Symphony. The song is featured on the band’s “S&M2,” dropping next Friday.
